The crisp autumn air bit at Alex's cheeks as he walked across the University of Michigan campus, the familiar crunch of fallen leaves beneath his feet. The man introduced himself as Professor Emeritus Robert Henderson, who had taught mechanical engineering at UM for forty years before retiring a decade ago. Every Wednesday afternoon, they met at the same table, Professor Henderson in his weathered Michigan Plaid Sweatshirt, Alex in his modern version of the same design.

Their conversations ranged from engineering principles Alex struggled with to life advice that no textbook could ever provide. "You know," Professor Henderson said during one of their meetings, running his fingers over the plaid pattern on his sleeve, "this sweatshirt has seen me through some of my toughest moments. Wore it when I was preparing my tenure application. Had it on when I got the news my father passed away. It's been to every home game since Reagan was president. Some things just become part of your story."

As the semester progressed, Alex found himself not only understanding engineering better but understanding himself better too. Years later, now a successful engineer with his own family, Alex still wears that Michigan Plaid Sweatshirt on difficult days at work and every Michigan game day. And every time he visits Ann Arbor, he makes sure to stop by the student union, hoping to spot a struggling student he might be able to help - while wearing the sweatshirt that started it all.
