God Speed was painted by Edmund Blair Leighton in 1900, and is reproduced here as a luxurious wall tapestry. Leighton was famous for his medieval and chivalric work, and God Speed is an excellent example. Here we see wall art of a lady bidding farewell to her lord as he goes off to war. She ties a bright red sash to his arm as a token, an act meant to assure his safe return. The griffin in the foreground symbolizes strength and courage. This piece speaks of the pure, high-minded ideals of a medieval world that, sadly, never was. Medieval Design.
